today in Premier League - Barcelona open Fabregas talks

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has confirmed Barcelona have made initial contact regarding a transfer for Cesc Fabregas, but no formal offer has yet been tabled by the Spanish and European champions.

Fabregas, a graduate of Barcelona's La Masia academy, is a long-term target for Pep Guardiola's side and recently admitted he was unaware of what his future holds now the transfer window is open.

Though Barca president Sandro Rosell is adamant the club will not pay "over the top" for the midfielder, it is believed he is a prime target for the club, along with Udinese's Alexis Sanchez and Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi.

Arsenal are determined to hold onto their influential captain but Hill-Wood also admits he would not blame Fabregas for wanting to return to Catalunya.

“Yes, they have spoken to us about Cesc," Hill-Wood told the Sunday Mirror. "They have been in touch. But so far they have not made a bid and we do not want to let him go.

“But he comes from Barcelona so it is understandable if he wanted to go back. However, they have not made an offer so far.”

It is reported that Barcelona have instructed vice-president Josep Bartomeu and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta to travel to London to open official talks with the Gunners.

Championship news : Shearer out of Cardiff running

Shearer, whose sole management experience has been a caretaker stint at Newcastle United during which the club was relegated from the Premier League, had been installed as the odds-on favourite for the job after a flurry of betting on Tuesday.

The former England captain said in a statement: "I can confirm that I was one of the candidates that the club spoke to about the vacant manager's position at Cardiff City. During these talks I was most impressed with the vision, ambition and determination of the owner Dato Chan Tien Ghee and the board.

"Unfortunately those talks were unsuccessful on this occasion. Cardiff City is a great club and I wish them every success next season."

Shearer's only previous managerial role was his ill-fated spell in charge of Newcastle at the tail-end of the 2008-09 season, where he won just one of his eight games in charge as the Magpies were relegated from the Premier League.

The Bluebirds have been without a manager since parting company with Dave Jones on May 30 in the wake of their Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Reading.

Wolves complete £5m signing of Jamie O'Hara from Tottenham

Wolves complete £5m signing of Jamie O'Hara from Tottenham
The midfielder, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Molineux, has made the switch permanent by agreeing a four-year contract with Mick McCarthy’s side

The midfielder agreed personal terms over the weekend and will sign permanently for Wolves on a four-year contract.

Wolves had already activated an option to sign O'Hara for £5m at the end of the season following his consistently impressive performances after arriving on loan in January.

O'Hara, 24, played a key role in keeping Wolves in the Premier League, scoring three goals in 13 appearances including one against Blackburn on the last day of the season.

Both Wolves and O'Hara were desperate to make the deal permanent, with the Tottenham youth product frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities at White Hart Lane.

“I think Jamie has shown his quality since he has been here,” said Wolves manager Mick McCarthy last month. “We've got a deal to do and I want to keep Jamie.

“He's what I call a real Premier League player and that's what we will be trying to recruit again this summer.”

O'Hara, who spent the 2009-10 season on loan at Portsmouth, will report for pre-season training on July 4.

Samir Nasri gambling with his Arsenal future as he seeks pay parity with Cesc Fabregas

By casting public doubt over his readiness to sign a new Arsenal contract that was agreed in principle four months ago, Samir Nasri has lit the blue touchpaper for another transfer saga that will dominate the window.

Arsenal fans already fretting over the possibility of losing Cesc Fabregas are now facing up to the reality that their next most creative player is questioning whether the grass is greener elsewhere.

However Nasri’s comments while on international duty with France are interpreted, it is clear there are issues to be resolved between player and club.

Many will view the Frenchman’s desire to discover whether Manchester United’s interest in him is “concrete” as a clear 'come and get me' plea to the Premier League champions.

World Football : Investigations FIFA, Argentina

World Football  Investigations FIFA, Argentina

FIFA can confirm that this match between Nigeria and Argentina was one that we had an active interest in, and forms part of a wider ongoing FIFA investigation," said FIFA in a statement.

"In particular, FIFA will be working closely with colleagues at the FIFA early warning system."

Refereree Ibrahim Chaibou of Niger awarded two controversial penalties in the match, Victor Obinna converting for Nigeria in the 27th minute and Mauro Boselli scoring for Argentina deep into stoppage time with the last kick of the match.

Nigeria had taken a 4-0 lead, and a surge of in-play bets on a fifth goal being scored have been reported.

Referee Ibrahim Chaibou awarded five minutes of added time but allowed the game to enter an eighth extra minute before awarding Argentina a controversial penalty.

He penalised Nigeria for a handball but replays showed the ball struck one defender on the leg before then hitting a team-mate in the stomach.

Manipulation of matches by gambling rings has become a major concern for world football's governing body FIFA and its European counterpart UEFA and both monitor thousands of matches for unusual betting patterns.

Last month, FIFA set up a partnership with Interpol and announced it would donate 20 million euros over the next 10 years to fight the problem.

FIFA is currently investigating two international friendlies played in Turkey in which seven penalties were awarded, one of them taken twice. The six match officials involved have been suspended pending the outcome.

FIFA has already tightened the rules around the arrangement of international friendlies.

Both FIFA and UEFA say that match-fixers tend to target lower-profile matches - often in the early qualifying rounds of European competition, lower division of national leagues or obscure international friendlies - to avoid attracting attention.

Wednesday's match was played on the same day as Sepp Blatter was re-elected as FIFA president in Zurich and emphasised a "zero tolerance" policy towards corruption.

Argentina sent a B team to the match in the Nigerian capital Abuja and the outcome also prompted Argentine FA president Julio Grondona to criticise his national team coach Sergio Batista.

"Batista asks for these matches, you can't (take) a risk like that," said Grondona, referring to Batista's decision to take a second-string team.

"One level is not the same as the other, Nigeria picked their best players."
